Why don’t more young people choose IT/Tech?

Despite IT and tech being among the fastest-growing industries, many young people are choosing other career paths. Why is that, and what can we do to attract more talent? To gain insights and ideas on how the IT industry can become more inclusive and appealing to the next generation, we conducted a survey among high school students, followed by focus groups. The results were presented earlier in a webinar.
Here is a summary:

Break the stereotypes
Many high school students still perceive IT as difficult and highly specialized – as if you have to be a coding computer nerd to fit in. But IT is much more than just programming. The industry spans everything from design, marketing, and project management to AI, robotics, and sustainability innovations. By showcasing this diversity, the industry can attract more people with different interests and backgrounds.

Highlight role models and social impact
When young people see how tech contributes to solving major societal issues – such as improving healthcare, combating climate change, and promoting social inclusion – the industry becomes more relevant. By featuring role models from various backgrounds, we demonstrate that there is room for everyone, no matter who they are.

Engage with youth where they are
Social media is key. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram offer companies the chance to showcase careers in an inspiring and accessible way. Let young employees share their own stories – this makes different career paths easier to relate to and more tangible.

Make entry paths easier and more accessible
To lower entry barriers, more internships, mentorship programs, and flexible work models (such as hybrid and remote jobs) are needed. Additionally, clearer and more creative job postings can help demystify technical jargon and show that IT has a place for everyone – even those who don’t see themselves as “tech people.”

Together, we can shape the future
Companies, schools, and society need to collaborate to broaden the perception of the IT industry. By showcasing the wide range of careers, emphasizing social impact, and making entry paths more accessible, we can inspire more young people to choose a future in tech. IT is not just the future – it’s a future where everyone can contribute.
