What is important when students choose a job?

Mecenat Students’ Award has generated several exciting rankings of the most popular employers among students right now. But the survey also provided valuable insights when we asked: What factors will be most important to you when choosing an employer?

If we were to summarize the answers in one word, it would be “Security.” It’s a topic that has gained importance in the broader societal debate, and it’s clearly reflected in the results of the Mecenat Students’ Award.

The most important factor when students choose an employer is, unsurprisingly, Salary, followed by Meaningful work tasks. Students have invested significant time, money, and effort into their education, and understandably want that investment to pay off.

A good salary is, of course, also a form of security – and the third most mentioned factor by students is Stability & Job Security. This is also evident in other ways. Looking at the employer rankings, we see that they are dominated by large, established companies in the private sector, while various government agencies and municipalities top the lists in many educational segments.

Opportunities for career development also rank high among important factors. This aligns with the large employers at the top of the lists, who have the resources to offer internal training and career paths within the organization.

Just over a quarter of the students mentioned Values and Social Responsibility as key when choosing an employer. Here, we noticed that students in social work-focused programs stood out – nearly half of them cited this as an important factor, whereas it appears less important among students in other fields.

The results are based on a survey sent to randomly selected students enrolled in post-secondary education.
